TRAVEL GUIDE NORTHEN BIWA LAKE

Zazen Experience(Zenchoji temple)

The construction of the main temple and monastery kitchen took 15 years to complete in 1790. The main temple with unique characteristics, which are often seen in the Soto Zen temples, has been designated as a tangible cultural property by Shiga prefecture. The kitchen, on the other hand, is a tangible cultural property of the city. It has been built on the north side and connected to the main hall with a corridor. Although the building itself is small, it boasts a majestic impression. You can also see the famous 5-meter Japanese red-cedar tree and many treasures such as a picture of the “Daruma-daishi” and the “Hayagriva”, or even its famous peony flowers which bloom altogether in June.
